We can only improve when we become aware of and acknowledge that something needs our attention. Sometimes, making changes to our psychological and/or physical habits can enhance our life positively.
Making any sort of changes to what we have always done is bound to take time, effort and a lot of practice. This is where a supportive environment can be helpful. And knowing that there are others going through similar experiences can be empowering for families.
“A great ‘family’ course. Doing it together puts us all on the same page as to how to ‘do’ and we learnt together. We have a lot of work ahead of us but I feel we have learnt good strategies to model as parents and support each other to be resilient. Not always easy as lots of changes to make and a life long journey but we have skills to help us all.”

Address common childhood challenges
We understand that parenting can be stressful at times. Parents and caregivers gain a lot from the Parent Strategies Workshop which focuses on many common childhood challenges. The workshop is ‘adults only’, allowing parents and caregivers to relax and not be distracted by children. If a second parent or caregiver cannot attend due to work or unchangeable commitments, we welcome the presence of another caregiver directly related to the child. For instance, this could be a grandparent, aunt or uncle. Please contact us if you require additional seats for more than two parents or caregivers.
Ask questions and receive feedback
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ask any questions and clarify and particular issues of concern. Sometimes this is easier done without your child present. Parents and caregivers will be given comprehensive information about the strategies and skills being learnt by the children in order to gain a better understanding of the content of Fun FRIENDS and FRIENDS for Life.
We strongly encourage two parents or caregivers to attend the Parenting Strategies Workshop but we understand that some parents may be unable to attend due to work or unchangeable commitments. Take home materials are provided for parents or caregivers to keep up with the Program content.
Learn to build resilience in the family
In addition to the strategies and skills taught to your child in Fun FRIENDS or FRIENDS for Life, parents and caregivers can learn how to build resilience in the family. We cover topics including but not limited to:
- Common childhood difficulties and developmental readiness
- Traditional parenting strategies eg. withdrawal of privileges, family time out and planned ignoring
- Preventative strategies for behaviour management eg. modelling positive behaviours and descriptive praise
- Mindfulness and awareness
- Self-care, relaxation and quiet time
- Routines, cohesion and consistency
- Risk and protective factors for healthy emotional development
- Parental happiness, health and well being
Parent Strategies is incorporated into the parallel sessions for parents/caregivers of children enrolled in group programs for ages 4 – 7 years or ages 8 – 10 years. This enables your family to learn a set of resilience skills and strategies at the same time and place.
